Term Definition
Kiba-dachi

Kiba-dachi (騎馬立ち), translated as "Horse-Riding Stance" or "Straddle Stance," is one of the foundational side-facing stances in traditional Shotokan Karate, renowned for developing immense lower-body strength, lateral stability, and root balance.

Key Characteristics & Mechanics

  • Weight Distribution: Weight is distributed evenly between both legs (50% / 50%), with the body's center of gravity held low and centered between the feet.

  • Foot Positioning: Feet are positioned parallel to each other, pointed straight ahead, and spaced approximately two shoulder-widths apart.

  • Knee Alignment: Knees are bent deeply and pressed firmly outward over the toes, creating a strong arch structure that engages the adductors, glutes, and quadriceps.

  • Pelvic Structure (Tension): The pelvis is tucked slightly forward with the spine kept strictly vertical. Tension is maintained outward along the lateral edges of the feet (sokuto), driving firm contact into the floor.

Functional Context in Budo

  • Side-Oriented Defense & Attack: Unlike forward-facing stances such as Zenkutsu-dachi, Kiba-dachi is primarily designed for generating lateral force, defending against side attacks, and engaging in close-quarters grappling or elbow strikes (empi-uchi).

  • Rooting & Base Stability: Serves as a vital training posture for forging physical endurance, opening the hips, strengthening joint structure, and grounding the Seika Tanden (lower abdominal center).

Presence in Shotokan Kata

  • The Tekki Series: Kiba-dachi is the defining, signature stance of all three Tekki kata (Tekki Shodan, Tekki Nidan, Tekki Sandan), performed entirely along a single linear line of movement (embusen).

  • Advanced Kata: Essential for performing lateral hammer-fist strikes (yoko kentsui-uchi), side kicks (yoko-geri), and elbow strikes in kata such as Heian Sandan, Heian 5, Empi, Jion, and Kanku-Dai.
