Term Definition
Kentsui-uchi

Kentsui-uchi (拳槌打ち / 鉄槌打ち), translated as "Hammer-Fist Strike" (also commonly referred to as Tettsui-uchi - 鉄槌打ち), is a powerful striking technique in traditional Japanese martial arts and Shotokan Karate that utilizes the bottom padded edge of the closed fist.

Etymology & Structural Breakdown

  • Ken (拳): "Fist."

  • Tsui / Tettsui (槌 / 鉄槌): "Hammer" or "Iron Hammer."

  • Uchi (打ち): "Strike" or "Smash" (derived from the verb uchu, indicating a whipping or circular striking action rather than a direct straight thrust like zuki).

Anatomy & Striking Surface

  • Impact Area: The contact point is the fleshy, muscular base of the palm side of the closed fist (the bottom of the hypothenar eminence), beneath the little finger.

  • Fist Formation: The fingers are curled tightly into a full fist with the thumb folded firmly over the index and middle fingers. The wrist must remain strong, straight, and rigidly aligned with the forearm to prevent hyperextension upon impact.

Mechanics & Technical Execution

  • Circular Kinetic Path: Unlike a linear straight punch (choku-zuki), Kentsui-uchi follows a whip-like or arc-shaped trajectory, driven by the snap of the elbow and powerful hip rotation (koshino kaiten).

  • Reaction Hand (Hikite): The non-striking hand is pulled back forcefully to the hip (hikite), generating counter-rotational force to maximize speed and power at impact.

  • Striking Angles & Directions:

    • Tate-Kentsui-uchi: Vertical hammer-fist strike (downward, targeting the nose, collarbone, or crown of the head).

    • Yoko-Kentsui-uchi: Lateral/side hammer-fist strike (striking outward across the body toward the temple, jaw, or ribs).

    • Ushiromote-Kentsui-uchi: Downward/rear striking motion into lower targets.

Functional Context & Kata Application

  • Close-Quarters Combat: Extremely versatile in short-distance engagements where a full linear punch cannot generate sufficient distance or acceleration.

  • Structural Resilience: Because the impact surface consists of heavy muscle and resilient connective tissue rather than the small bones of the knuckles, it carries a lower risk of hand fracture (boxer's fracture) when striking hard targets like the jawline, collarbone, or skull.

  • Presence in Shotokan Kata: Featured prominently across basic and advanced kata sequences—most notably in Heian Shodan (the dynamic turning side hammer-fist block/strike), Heian Nidan, Heian Sandan, and Tekki Shodan.
