Term Definition
Irimi

Irimi (入り身), translated as "Entering" or "Entering Body," is a foundational martial arts principle and tactical movement concept centered on entering directly into an opponent's attack line or close-quarters space.

Key Characteristics & Mechanics

  • Direct Forward Movement: Rather than retreating or moving purely sideways, irimi involves stepping decisively forward—often slightly off-axis—to slip past the opponent's lead strike or guard.

  • Neutralizing the Attack: By entering the space at the moment an attack is launched, the practitioner disrupts the opponent's timing, range, and momentum before their strike reaches maximum acceleration or extension.

  • Blended Body Positioning: The entry is executed with precise body angling (tai sabaki), allowing the practitioner to pass safely behind or to the outside of the incoming strike while establishing a dominant position.

Function & Context in Budo

  • Tactical Application: Irimi forms the core mechanics for close-range counters, joint locks (joint manipulation), sweeps, and takedowns.

  • Karate Integration: In Shotokan and traditional Budo systems, irimi embodies an assertive mindset: taking control of distance (maai) and timing (deai) to neutralize an aggressive opponent before they can complete a combination.

  • Harmonizing with Sen: It aligns closely with advance initiative principles such as sen no sen (taking the initiative at the moment of the opponent's attack).
