Term Definition
Ippon kumite

Ippon Kumite (一本組手), translated as "One-Step Sparring," is a foundational pre-arranged sparring drill practiced extensively in traditional karate, particularly within Shotokan.

Key Characteristics & Structure

  • Pre-Determined Attacks: The defender knows in advance the exact target level (jodan, chudan, or gedan) and technique (such as oi-zuki or mae-geri) that the attacker will execute.

  • Single-Step Execution: The attacker steps forward with high intensity to deliver a single, decisive attack. The defender must execute a single blocking technique combined immediately with a decisive counter-strike.

  • Distance & Timing (Maai & Deai): Both practitioners focus heavily on distance management (maai), correct stepping, razor-sharp timing, and maintaining control without making harmful contact.

Purpose & Budo Philosophy

  • Bridge to Free Sparring: It acts as a crucial intermediate bridge between basic line drills (kihon) and unscripted free sparring (jiyu kumite).

  • Ikken Hissatsu Principle: Ippon kumite embodies the traditional concept of ikken hissatsu ("to kill with one blow"), training the martial artist to treat every defense and counter as if it were the single opportunity to end a conflict.

  • Focus and Zanshin: Practitioners cultivate strong focus (kime) and awareness (zanshin) before, during, and after the execution of the technique.
