Term Definition
keiko gi

Keiko-gi (稽古着 / 稽古衣), translated literally as "Training Wear" or "Practice Suit," is the traditional uniform worn during practice in Japanese martial arts (Budo). While commonly referred to in everyday language as a Gi (着), Keiko-gi is the formal collective term for training attire used across disciplines like Karate, Judo, Aikido, and Kendo.

Etymology & Structural Breakdown

  • Keiko (稽古): Meaning "practice," "training," or "studying the past." In Budo philosophy, keiko implies reflection and disciplined self-improvement through practice.

  • Gi / Ki (着 / 衣): Meaning "garment," "clothing," or "wear."

Components of the Keiko-gi

A standard Keiko-gi for striking disciplines like Shotokan Karate consists of three primary elements:

  1. Uwagi (上衣): The traditional cross-over jacket, constructed with reinforced stitching along the lapel and shoulders to withstand pulling and repetitive motion.

  2. Shitabaki / Zubon (下穿き / ズボン): Trousers designed with a loose fit and gusseted crotch to allow full range of motion for kicks, deep stances, and footwork.

  3. Obi (帯): The belt, tied around the waist to keep the jacket closed and to denote the practitioner’s rank, experience level, and progression within the dojo hierarchy.

Function & Material Characteristics

  • Fabric & Durability: Traditional keiko-gi are crafted from heavy-duty, woven 100% natural cotton canvas or cotton-blend fabrics. Heavyweight cotton (typically 12 oz. to 14 oz.) provides structure, breathability, durability under heavy use, and produces the crisp acoustic "snap" characteristic of focused techniques (kime).

  • Sanitation & Hygiene: Maintaining a clean, well-pressed, and intact keiko-gi is an essential duty of every martial artist, reflecting self-respect, respect for one's training partners, and respect for the dojo space.

Symbolism & Etiquette in Budo

  • Egalitarian Uniformity: By wearing identical keiko-gi, all practitioners enter the dojo as equals—leaving behind societal status, wealth, and external distinctions to focus solely on shared training.

  • Karate-gi (空手着): In Karate, the keiko-gi is specifically styled as a Karate-gi, which is lighter and cut differently than the heavy, reinforced weave of a Judo-gi (designed for grappling and throwing).
