Term Definition
Kamatae

Kamate (構え / 構えて), often transcribed or phonetically written as Kamatae (or Kamaete), is the direct command and verbal instruction meaning "Take Stance!" or "Assume Combative Readiness!" in traditional Japanese martial arts and Shotokan Karate.

Key Breakdown & Etymology

  • Root Word (Kamae - 構え): Noun form meaning "posture," "stance," or "frame of readiness."

  • Imperative Form (Kamaete - 構えて): The te-form/imperative command of the verb kamaeru (構える), instructing practitioners to physically drop into their guard and mentally engage their readiness.

  • Phonetic Variations: In western dojos and verbal commands, Kamaete is frequently pronounced or transliterated phonetically as Kamatae.

Dojo Application & Execution

  • Kihon and Kumite Command: Issued by the Sensei before initiating line drills or sparring exchanges. Upon hearing "Kamatae!" (or "Kamaete!"), students step dynamically into a fighting stance (such as zenkutsu-dachi or a free fighting guard) with hands raised, accompanied by a sharp breath or kiai.

  • Transition of State: Hearing the command serves as a psychological trigger—instantly transitioning the practitioner from a relaxed state (shizentai) into a state of heightened focus (zanshin) and physical readiness to attack or defend.
