Term Definition
Kaisetsu

Kaisetsu (解説), translated as "Explanation," "Commentary," or "Exposition," is the formal process of detailed technical explanation and breakdown of martial arts movements, kata applications, and principles.

Key Characteristics & Mechanics

  • Technical Analysis: Kaisetsu involves breaking down a technique into its core components—analyzing footwork, stance, hip rotation, breathing, distance (maai), and biomechanics—to ensure students understand how and why a movement functions.

  • Theory Behind Action: While physical repetition (kihon) builds muscle memory, kaisetsu bridges the gap between physical execution and cognitive understanding, ensuring techniques are executed with purpose rather than blind imitation.

Function & Context in Budo

  • Relation to Bunkai: While Bunkai (分解) refers to the practical application and combat breakdown of a kata against an opponent, Kaisetsu is the verbal and conceptual explanation given by an instructor to clarify the underlying principles, targets, and nuances of those applications.

  • Instructional Role: In the traditional dojo environment, kaisetsu allows the Sensei to convey historical context, hidden tactical options, and safety considerations during training.
