Term Definition
Hidari

Hidari (左) is the Japanese word for "left."

Martial Arts Context & Usage

In traditional karate (such as Shotokan), hidari is used as a directional prefix to specify the execution of a stance, block, strike, or kick using the left side of the body.

  • Stance Direction: Used when entering a stance with the left foot forward—for example, hidari zenkutsu-dachi (left forward stance) or hidari kamaete (take a ready stance with the left side forward).

  • Technique Execution: Distinguishes left-sided techniques from right-sided ones—for example, hidari seiken zuki (left forefist punch) or hidari gedan barai (left low block).

  • Counterpart: Its direct counterpart is Migi (右), which means "right."
