Term Definition
Gohon-kumite

Gohon Kumite (五本組手, Five-Step Sparring—often misspelled as gohan) is a fundamental, pre-arranged partner drill in traditional karate (most notably Shotokan).

It serves as a foundational bridge between basic solo line work (kihon) and free sparring (jiyu kumite).

Structure & Dynamics

  • The Setup: Two training partners face each other in a controlled environment. One acts as the attacker (semete) and the other as the defender (ukete).

  • The Sequence: The attacker announces the target (typically jodan / head or chudan / chest) and advances straight forward executing five consecutive identical attacks (e.g., stepping stepping stepping stepping stepping lunge punch).

  • The Defense: The defender steps backward five times, executing a matching block for each incoming attack. Immediately following the fifth block, the defender delivers a decisive counterattack (usually gyaku-zuki or reverse punch) accompanied by a strong kiai.

Core Training Objectives

  • Distance (Maai): Developing a precise spatial sense of stepping back just enough to clear incoming strikes.

  • Timing & Cadence: Synchronizing movement, blocks, and stances to an opponent's continuous rhythm.

  • Stance Stability: Maintaining proper stance height, posture, and hip control while moving rapidly backward under pressure.
